Competition for places key for Blues

Luke Turner discusses how the options available to Blues will help with the play-off push…

It was clear last season that Blues weren’t quite equipped enough to last the distance in their charge for the play-offs.

This season, however, seems different and that is down to one thing in particular- the strength in depth we now have.

At Huddersfield the other weekend, we had the likes of Jacques Maghoma, Che Adams, Diego Fabbrini and Greg Stewart all on the bench.

Those are four excellent options for Gary Rowett to have and call upon if the eleven on the pitch needed changing.

It’s crucial that, if we are to sustain a play-off challenge this season, then we have players pushing each other for their position and everyone needs to feel that they can contribute.

On his day, Adams really can be a top player but he is still young and learning at this level. He will have up and down spells where he isn’t performing so it’s ideal that we have several options that can replace him.

The same goes for if Clayton Donaldson got injured. Last season we wouldn’t have been able to cope but having Lukas Jutkiewicz, who is arguably on a par as first choice striker with Donaldson now, gives us the ability to slot him into place without worrying about any impact on the side.

The only real worry I would have is if we had an injury to one of our back four. They are currently settled together and the partnership of Morrison and Shotton is one which we don’t want to break up.

Apart from that, we have a midfield and attack that has flexibility with different options available that can all contribute and play a big part in hopefully taking Blues to that top six.
