Cogley’s time to shine?

Luke Turner on who should replace Spector at right back…

With Jonathan Spector being suspended for the next three games after his sending off in the closing stages against Bristol City on Saturday, it gives Gary Rowett a decision to make.

Of course, that decision is who to replace Spector with.

Apart from Paul Caddis, who is currently injured, the only recognised right back in and around the first team squad is Josh Cogley.

I feel that this just may be his time to step into the side and start the next game away at Brentford.

His only first team appearance this season came in the EFL Cup loss to Oxford and he has recently found himself on the bench for first team fixtures.

I think we have seen from last season and the one game this season that Ryan Shotton is a no-go at right back.

Rowett shouldn’t even contemplate breaking up the partnership between Shotton and Michael Morrison as it is clear that the former struggles at full back.

It`s tough enough having to change such a consistent defence without creating another problem by splitting up one of the Championship`s best centre half duo.

Cogley`s development will only enhance by playing for the first team and this is the perfect time to give him the opportunity to show what he’s made of.

It’s also an opportunity that he must take and grasp with both hands. If he wants to have a career at Birmingham City then he`ll need to show Rowett that he can be trusted.

His inclusion may go slightly against Rowett`s solid defensive approach but he will offer us a lot more going forward which could even benefit us.

Of course, he’s still young and it won’t be a case of make or break for him but, for his immediate future, it’s a chance for him to impress.

Spector`s suspension is a shame because the back four has been excellent for us this season and they have built up a strong relationship.

However, it is a chance for someone else to come into the team, do a job and maybe even keep Spector out of the side once his three match ban ends.
