Lee Clark has revealed that Blues didn’t even consider Crystal Palace’s deadline day bid for Demarai Gray before rejecting it.

Lee Clark tried, as many do, to do some business on deadline day. Bizarrely though, he was more happy about no one leaving, rather than getting someone in.

Birmingham in recent years have been selling all of their prized talent for cash. But now they have signalled they do not need to bring in money for operations any more.

Clark said on BirminghamMail.co.uk

One good thing for me about the deadline day was that no players went out of the door,

It was rejected out of hand, it didn`t even get considered.

When you keep producing young players you want to have a proper chance to nurture them for a few years and let them learn the game and understand about it,

It was good work by the club because in years gone by they might have taken that offer.

It also tells me that in terms of the financial side of the club, things seem a little bit better.

And also whereby we are not actually encouraging clubs to bid for our players, or get the best deal.

This one was turned down flat. We said that we wanted the player to continue his education with us.

Palace bid half a million pound to take young Gray to London, but Blues said no. Selling Gray could have been a disaster for club relations with fans who are almost to the point of not caring when something like this happens.

Such news that the club is now digging its heels in may even encourage some to come back to the club and see a few games this year.

There is still a long way to go for Birmingham. The squad still lacks some depth of quality but the signs are there for a more stable environment for young players to come through.
