Lee Clark has insisted that all was not lost when the pre-season friendly was cancelled against Mansfield and that the team responded to a training game.

Mansfield Town v Birmingham City was cancelled by the cubs after the Nottinghamshire police put a £30,000 bill on the game.

Clark had a practice match staged just like a competitive game, in full kits and with match officials.

Birmingham players got more playing time according to Clark, playing 70 minutes each, which he said is not possible in a friendly game.

The boss explained to the players that this game was going to be affecting his decision making about the team and he felt the players approached the game accordingly.

“As I said to the lads, you have got to treat it as a proper game, another chance to impress to get in the team against Middlesbrough”

Clark did confirm that there were no injuries in the game.

“We are looking forward to a good week`s training now, leading up to Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday.”

It is not ideal missing a friendly and ideally not the Mansfield game as it presented a chance to play a team from slightly higher in the football league. Birmingham could not be a game behind in their preparations as they gear up to face Kidderminster this weekend.

Celtic youngster Johnstone is the topic of some interest from Birmingham and the boss did update us on the situation.

“Celtic are demanding compensation but we`re hoping we can come to some agreement.”
