On this day, 29th July, falls the one year anniversary of Chucho’s sudden death. A fan favourite when at St. Andrews he delivered flare, creativity and excitement to the game.

Although only scoring 3 goals in 30 games, it was his contribution and attacking instinct that won over the hearts of Bluenoses. He was part of the 2009/10 team in which Blues finished in their highest ever position in the Premier League of 9th.

Benitez’s goals came away at Liverpool, Wigan and Everton (cup). His only St Andrews goal coming on the final home game of the season against Burnley.

Chucho was supposed to sign permanently for Birmingham for a record fee of £9 million but a medical revealed a knee complication that Blues were worried about and he signed on loan for the season.

He was admired by all football fans particularly in his home nation where the no 11 Chucho shirt has been retired in his honour. His unexpected death shocked millions. He will never be forgotten.
