Caution: Rotherham Banana Skin

With the Birmingham derby now gone, it is time to get back to matters in the Championship. Blues` form has dipped of late and while the performances (bar Forest) have been decent enough, football is a business based on results.

On paper, Rotherham looks like the perfect fixture right now – bottom of the league and struggling for points. But Blues have made a pigs ear of this type of game plenty of times in the past. A banana skin they call it.

To be honest, this is the first real test for Blues at home this season. The first home league game that comes with the expectation of winning. I sincerely hope they do not cock it up.

Stephen Gleeson was superb yet again at Villa Park, he has had a great start to the season. I have said numerous times that I believe he is the most underrated player in the squad. He is the heartbeat of the midfield. Alongside Maikel Kieftenbeld, Blues have a solid looking engine room.

Overall, the squad looks ok. Performances haven`t been bad at all and results have been mainly positive. But I still feel we`re a bit thin on the ground in terms of strength in depth. Clayton Donaldson`s only competitor for the forward berth is Nicolai Brock-Madsen. Maybe keeping hold of Wes Thomas or Lee Novak would have been a good idea.

When the players take to the hallowed turf tomorrow at 3pm, the players must not underestimate a battling Rotherham side. Simply put, get the job done. Rotherham will be up for it and they will scrap for every ball. If need be, Blues must do it the ugly way. Three points is all that matters.
