Karen Carney is a well known figure from the Blues’ Ladies team. She has been the captain recently but also was instrumental in the FA Cup victory just a few years ago, defeating Chelsea.

Now, she has opted to join Chelsea Ladies, the reigning Super League Champions. Birmingham Ladies were close to relegation last season and one of the reasons for this was that they had to sell a lot of players to other clubs. Due to this, things didn’t go as well as they had done the previous year when the club finished second and gained a Champions League spot.

Karen Carney is well known for her impact in the Women’s World Cup and this sums her up. She is a fighter and will wear her heart on her sleeves at all times.

Despite Birmingham Ladies offering her a new contract, Karen has declined. A bluenose herself, this must have been a hard decision but in order to maximise her footballing career, she felt that the time was right to move on.

She will leave the club on the 31st of December which is when her contract will expire. Before joining Chelsea for the start of the season. The 28 year old has signed a contract for 2 years.

Being born in Solihull, she knows everything about the city and the club and having joined the Blues’ at 11, she has been a great servant to our club.

On the official Blues’ Ladies site she has said, ‘From the bottom of my heart I cannot thank the fans and the club enough for all the support they have shown me personally and the team.’

She has been placed into footballs hall of fame, which she states is a great honour, and this shows what a great player she is. She has led our team to the semi-finals of the Champions league and she has given everything to this club.

However David Parker has said that, ‘when this new journey ends she would like to end her career here at Birmingham if the opportunity ever arose.’ So the comeback may be on for Karen in the future. For now though, she will join Chelsea Ladies.
