Captain Robbo Remains Relevant

Sometimes, a player can play a vital role off the pitch as opposed to on it. That is likely to be the case with Paul Robinson next term and was the vision Gary Rowett had for the veteran when offering him a one-year contract extension.

As club captain, Robbo has a duty to encourage his teammates, particularly those of a younger age and if he can’t do that on the field, he will make a massive contribution to the morale and togetherness in the dressing room.

Robinson was the victim of some unfair social media abuse last season after a couple of poor performances. But the majority of Blues fans appreciate his time at the club and the performances he’s put in. With age not on his side, Robinson who turns 37 in December, the likelihood is that he will find games hard to come by as Rowett hopes to remould his Blues squad.

After missing out on the signing of Rob Kiernan last week, the Blues manager will move his focus elsewhere as he looks to sign a central defensive partner for Michael Morrison. At present, only Robinson and Jonathan Spector offer back-up if you take away Jonathan Grounds who is naturally a left-back.

The dressing room is where Robinson will play a key role next season. With young players such as Dimi Gray, Koby Arthur, Reece Brown and Nick Townsend in the squad, they could benefit from an experienced hand over their shoulders during times of adversity.

Watford-born Robinson signed from the club in September 2012. Initially, he was bought in on a one-month deal as cover, by then-manager Lee Clark. After a string of solid displays, he was drafted in on a more permanent basis and handed the captaincy.

At his ripe old age, a few off-days are understandable. But with a player of his mould in the team, the fans are always guaranteed guts and determination. And more importantly, a leader.
