Blues Match Zone

Can Blues put Wolves’ champagne back on ice?

No doubt following Tuesday night’s defeat at Bristol City, there was an air of frustration from the fans, players and coaching staff.

Other results meant Blues could have taken a strong grip on survival.

However, it wasn’t to be.

With teams around us not gaining any points, Blues remain three points clear of third-bottom Barnsley.

The performance was decent again, there’s no doubting that. Yes, sloppy goals were conceded but Blues are creating chances and looking threatening which they haven’t always managed to do consistently this season.

Had we taken our chances in the last two games, we may have been safe by now.

Facing Wolves earlier in the season, Blues were outclassed. There was a huge gulf in quality and confidence between the two sides and Blues didn’t cause Wolves too many problems.

Even though it was only a 1-0, it ought to have been more.

Blues are a very different prospect for Wolves now, however. A win for Wolves on Sunday secures their promotion to Premier League and Blues certainly aren’t going to roll over for them.

The confidence around the place, the level of performance and the creativity that is flowing throughout the side will most definitely give Wolves something to think about. Blues are a different side to when they last met. Wolves will know that.

With Barnsley facing Bolton on Saturday, Blues can’t possibly be in the relegation zone come Sunday but we could be much closer to it.

However, there is a strange sense of calm heading into this game. Blues have nothing to lose so why not go have a go?

Garry Monk will have the team up for it and an upset isn’t beyond the realms of possibility.

Think back to this fixture last season. Somehow, Gianfranco Zola’s side pulled a win out of the bag.

Sam Gallagher and Craig Gardner returning to fitness will provide a huge boost to Blues for the run-in.

These remaining four games are by no means easy and results are needed. What a perfect way it would be to do that against your local rivals and delay their promotion party for another week.

A win on Sunday would be huge. Here’s hoping.
