Aston Villa defender Gary Cahill is being linked with a move to Birmingham City. Predictable, unexciting but, given the way transfer windows normally go, it probably will happen.

However, with future Liverpool boss Martin O’Neill reportedly wanting £4million for the 22-year-old, both Birmingham and Derby County are hoping that a loan deal can be arranged rather than a permanent switch.

According to the Express & Star, Cahill is having talks at Villa today regarding his future today. Whatever answer he is given, Cahill will have to make a decision after being punted out to both Burnley and Sheffield United on loan in recent years.

Few Villa fans appear to be keen on seeing Cahill leave their club. Villa Park season ticket holder Jonathan Fear, in an article on Vital Villa, said: “(I’m) still not convinced a young, quality defender like this should be being sold and hope he isn’t.” Then again, don’t be too surprised if some fans change their view to “O’Neill knows what he is doing” if and when the player is sold!

Sadly, though, it’s just not possible to get excited about the possible move and the current January window is one of the most boring since the current transfer system was introduced – and not just for Birmingham!
