Steve Bruce has said that he used to go mad over international breaks, and especially this time round he wanted the players on the training pitch to correct the mistakes against Cardiff.

‘When I was younger with the internationals I used to go mad but ‘what can you do about it’?

‘You think ‘two weeks great’ – that’s plenty of time to work on the training ground.

‘The problem is that you’d like to work on the things you did wrong against Cardiff and try and put them right but that’s difficult with eight players away, so it’s a frustration.

‘I think the international games should be on a Wednesday and a Saturday, so that they can come back to their club for a week.

‘That’s my opinion because we do pay them, but at the same time I understand international managers want to prepare them as well.’
