Blues boss Steve Bruce has hailed the contribution of our own Teddy Sheringham – new boy Chris Sutton.

The striker, signed on a free transfer from Celtic last month, has yet to hit the back of the net for the club, but Bruce is still happy with the player’s overall play.

Bruce said: ‘Chris Sutton has given us something else and proved to people already what a top, top player he has been.

‘He has shown why he has been at the top for 15 years, why he has carried off league titles in England with Blackburn and in Scotland with Celtic. I have been delighted with him.

‘He has had a massive influence in the three or four games he’s played – not just the way he has led the line but also with the way he has been in the dressing room. He is popular and is a big player.

‘He is clever, tough, intelligent – a proper footballer. He is like Teddy Sheringham. He is smart, clever and links the play up ever so well.

‘When you get up to him in and around the box he has got that great strength in keeping the ball and bringing people into the game – which is very good.’

Sutton is guaranteed a start in Monday’s match against West Ham at Upton Park, as long as he manages to shake off a slight groin strain.

Whilst his contribution has been impressive, he will be hoping – as will the rest of the forwards – to get on the scoresheet sooner rather than later as the club look to avoid relegation.
