Bringing Leeds United striker in would be a waste for Blues

Another day, another transfer rumour! Yesterday, May 19th, Birmingham City were linked with a move for out of contract Leeds United striker Mirco Antenucci and although it may seem like an ambitious target, I think it would be one that is wasted.

It is well documented that Blues boss Gary Rowett wants to bring a striker in to challenge Clayton Donaldson and even James Vaughan ahead of the 2016/17 season and Antenucci is the latest forward to pop up that is supposedly interesting us.

However, having only scored 19 goals in 80 games for United, he is a player that I would much rather stay away from and although he has produced some fine performances during his time with the former Premier League side, he just isn’t the sort of player that we should be looking at in my opinion.

Blues aren’t the sort of side to just throw money at people in order to bring them in and the Italian forward is believed to be on a considerable wage at Elland Road and personally, I don’t think we are likely to match what he is on.

Also, bringing him in would be a waste of a transfer in my eyes. At the age of 31, the ex-Catania striker is only one year younger than Donaldson and that rules him out of being a long term player for us because we can probably only get another year or so out of him in top form, which the Sky Bet Championship is yet to see.

There are far better strikers out there who are on less money and that are wanting to achieve something in a bigger league. I keep using the example of Walsall striker Tom Bradshaw in my articles but that is because he is a consistent goal scorer outside of the top two tiers who is clearly worth the gamble.

It amazed me last season when league newcomers Bristol City were throwing stupid money at strikers and none of them wanted to go to them. Why on earth they didn’t move for Bradshaw is beyond me and I think Blues really need to push through a move for him, especially before the Euros in France this summer because if he has a good tournament, his price will rocket.

Like I have said previously, Blues need a young, hungry goal scorer and unfortunately, for me, that isn’t Leeds striker Antenucci. He would be a waste of wages that we could spend on someone else and I just don’t think that he would be on Rowett’s radar unless he became desperate to bring in a striker that has Championship experience.

Blues fans, what do you think? Would Mirco Antenucci be worth the gamble? Let us know in the comment section down below!
