Luke Turner’s views on the 3-0 demolition of Derby…

Monday mornings are a little bit of a pain to most of us but, hopefully, Blues fans found it that little bit easier getting out of bed following Saturday`s fantastic 3-0 victory at Derby.

Before heading to the iPro, I did have a feeling that we could maybe nick it by one goal but the most likely outcome was a Derby win or a hard fought point for Blues.

I don’t think any of us would`ve envisaged us scoring three goals and conceding none.

It was an expertly executed performance by Gary Rowett`s Blues. They were solid, organised and dangerous in attack.

The first half was a typical dogged display where we limited The Rams to little in front of goal and pretty much ended their attacks before they had even begun.

The second half, however, was a different story. Blues were dominant, first to every loose ball and ruthless in front of goal.

Every single player did their job and more. The two centre backs, Michael Morrison and goal scorer Paul Robinson were commanding and led by example.

The two full backs did a great job in limiting two very good wingers in Johnny Russell and Tom Ince to little and the midfield three covered ground, broke up attacks and then began their own.

In fact, both defensive midfielders, Gleeson and Kieftenbeld even grabbed themselves a goal each. Was it a shot or was it a cross from Gleeson? There wasn’t any doubt about Kieftenbeld`s strike. What a sensational volley it was and very much deserved for another phenomenal performance by the Dutchman.

The frontmen of Maghoma, Donaldson and Toral were all very involved in the play and caused trouble all afternoon.

For me, Jon Toral was the best player on the pitch at times. His ability to dribble with the ball close to his feet, create chances and find those pockets in between the lines was a joy to watch. Moving him in field from the wide position was a wise move from Rowett.

Overall, it was an excellent collective team effort which was worthy of winning any game. Like I said in my article prior to the game, spending money isn’t going to win you games on its own.

Blues have a group of players with great team spirit, determination and also the quality to go with it as well.

The 3,097 Bluenoses were treated to a truly exceptional performance and their support throughout no doubt pushed the players on even more.

The gap between Blues and Derby is now just six points and Rowett`s side are just two points off the play offs. Anything is possible. Now for a huge game back at St Andrews against play off rivals Ipswich.
