Bookies Fancy Birmingham Upset

Birmingham have been tipped to beat West Brom on Saturday in what should be a interesting friendly derby.

The reason for the optimism? well Blues have lost just twice under Rowett and he is now beginning to get some real praise for the job he is doing at the club.

A manager with impressive tactical ability and a system that seems to be near enough unbelievably effective. It’s not just that, his management of players, expectations and the media have all rolled up into a great start at Birmingham.

But just how will this upset go? I’m going to stick my neck on the line and predict some wholesale changes just like at Blyth.

Being honest, we all expected a few changes, but we were given 10 and I don’t think Rowett has lost any faith in the squad, despite the 3-2 scare up north.

Where I think Birmingham might have a chance is that Rowett will install a belief into his players and urge them to go and win this game. Will that be enough? we have to recognise that West Brom have some quality players and will pose a huge test.

The sense I get from Pulis is that he is focused on the Premier League, which I can totally understand. That is where the bread is buttered and in terms of cup runs, there’s always next year.

It’s a tough one to call, that might become a bit easier once we see the lineups on Saturday.

On a side note …

I recently read a blog labeling Blues an average Championship team that are simply in good form.

I disagree, just a few months ago we were doomed, now we are in the process of a totally reevaluation of our capabilities.

What has happened is a manager has evaluated what his players are good at, and has them doing just that; effectively. Blues very much have a strict structure as to who and when each player contributes to each phase of play.

Not only that, but after what could have been hammer blows, such as the defeat to Blackpool, or the drumming by Derby, Birmingham stood firm and continued their run of ‘form’.

There is a collective will that stems through everyone involved with Rowett’s team and although I do think the game will be tough, even a loss doesn’t spell the end for Blues.

Sure confidence plays a bit part in how well player’s play and I tend to describe teams in good form as playing with confidence. But when defeat’s such as the ones mentioned above don’t burst the bubble, it’s a disservice to simply write Blues off as ‘in form’.

They’re a good side that deserve some credit.
