Chris Hughton took control of the Birmingham City side for the first time at the weekend since joining the club and saw his team pull off a 1-0 win at Cork.

New signing Adam Rooney got the all important goal which he scored half an hour into the first half.

There were plenty of players used with seven changes being made at half time so that most of the squad got some match play under their belts.

Hughton told the club’s official website: ‘Coming away from the game with no injuries was the most important thing for us.

‘We probably could have penetrated a little more in the final third. We had some good periods of possession but probably didn’t threaten the goal as much as we would have liked, but it’s our first game.

‘We always knew we were going to make a few changes at half-time, but the changes disrupted the flow a little bit. I think when that happens you need a goal to perhaps change it a little bit. But it was a nice opportunity for the young lads. In particular I thought Nathan Redmond did very well.’
