Blues Development squad suffered an opening day defeat after being beaten 3-1 by Brentford at St Andrews on Monday. Blues manager Richard Beale put out yet another strong Blues side but that couldn’t prevent defeat in the opening Professional Development league match.

Blues had a horror start as some sloppy defending led to Brentford’s Jan Holldack firing a close range shot past Connall Trueman. Trueman was once again beaten just minutes later as Holldack drove a shot from the edge of the box past the Blues keeper, this giving Brentford a very healthy 2-0 advantage.

Blues failed to create many chances in the first half and were once again stung by the bees. Daniel O’Shaughnessy headed home from just 5 yards out after some more disappointing Blues defending from a Brentford corner, Blues found themselves with a massive hill to climb as the entered the second half 3-0 down.

Luckily, the second half was a much improved performance from Blues, Viv Solomon started the second half brightly and earned his side a penalty. After cutting in from the left, Solomon was hacked down in the box. The winger cooly stepped up and slotted past the Brentford keeper to make it 3-1 and cut the deficit.

Blues then created many chances throughout the second half but couldn’t get that elusive goal to set up an interesting finale. Solomon, Truslove and substitute Wes McDonald all went close but all failed to earn Blues a way back into the game and it ended in a disappointing 3-1 defeat at St Andrews.

Blues: Trueman, Cogley Seddon, Harding, Baba, Cooper, Truslove, O’Neill (McDonald 61), Solomon-Otabor, Abbotts (McFarlane 77) Jones. Not used: Weaver, Cotton.

With the likes of Harding, Jones and Solomon all involved on Monday night, was that a disappointing result for Blues?
