Blues Stage Fightback But Not Enough

Birmingham City got off to a terrible start in the game against Hull City at St Andrews on Saturday, but in the end the result was closer than we might first have feared.

This looked grim for Blues early on with Sone Aluko looking like he had a point to prove, he forced an early save out of Jack Butland inside the first five minutes.

On 11 minutes the same man found himself with another chance but this time he could not keep his effort on target.

At the other end, Wade Elliott had the chance to put the home side ahead but he too was off target.

But just before the quarter hour mark came Aluko got the goal he looked determined to get when he picked up a pass from Jay Simpson and beat Butland convincingly from close range.

Then the same player increased the lead when he got his and Hull’s second, this time making no mistake from around the twelve yard mark.
Then Aluko turned provider when he set up James Chester who headed home for 3-0.

Ravel Morrison pulled one back for Birmingham with a right-footed shot from around 12 yards out just five minutes later.

The second half started a lot more positively for Blues when Marlon King fired home to make it 3-2 with just a minute of the second half played.

Simpson came close to scoring for Hull again just after the hour mark, but his shot was off target.

Then Aaron Mclean should have put the game out of reach of Blues with eight minutes left but he too was off target and headed over the crossbar.
