Blues slipping and sliding in the wrong direction

|

Whilst the Leeds United game was just about as eventful as any Christmas period one you could wish to see, the final result saw another Birmingham City slip further down the Championship league table.

Scoring four goals at home would normally secure most teams three points, but as we are BCFC, we always expect twists and turns at every minute. Defensively we are a mess and even without Roberts and Clarke-Salter we should certainly be a bit of a force at the back, especially at home and with experienced players.

Nobody can really blame Clotet and co with this defeat as our forward play was good and at times quite powerful. What is notable is the poor positioning of our back four and decision making. Dean and Harding are not a good pair and it shows. Harding, in my opinion, is better placed at right back with Colin ahead of him in a right midfield position. Harding has played there and been a mini success at times when Colin was injured two seasons ago. Dean is useful but neither commanding or reassuring. Having the injured pair of Roberts and Clarke-Salter back is important and cannot come quickly enough.

Sliding down the league table is painful and my dreaded fifteenth spot a few weeks ago now seems a place to dream of.

Next up Wigan and who knows what will happen as all sides in this league have something about them. Do we concentrate on scoring or keeping it tight throughout and keep a clean sheet? Should the Leeds match be anything to go on, then scoring at will might not be the answer.

Dean and co have the experience to do better and I am sure they can improve but not as things stand with the current set up. My hope is that we get a few points on the board before the inevitable change happens. Somewhere along the line, our players have got to improve their own performances, only Bellingham is the exception and that is sad.

Wigan should be an ideal platform to get that win we desperately need and kick start the season. As boring as it sounds our players individually owe it to themselves to up their performances and if tightening up at the back is the way forward then so be it. Each point is precious from now on whoever the opposition is.
