Who’s ready for another Spaniard at St Andrew’s?
Yes you heard me, the Spanish invasion could be set to continue as the Blues are chasing yet another one to add to the ranks. Seriously that whole idea of renaming St Andrew’s to San Andreas, I still maintain we’re one or two more signings away from that being the official name of the ground.
Even though the transfer window has closed, that doesn’t stop clubs from signing free agents. According to French outlet FootMercato, the Blues are interested in signing former Getafe defender Alberto Redondo, although they do face competition from fellow Championship side Queens Park Rangers as well as clubs from abroad as RMC (via GFFN) report that Lille and St. Etienne have also been keeping an eye on him this summer.
Just quickly speaking of free agents, I should point out that Daniel Sturridge is today in the process of signing for Turkish side Trabzonspor, so can we put to bed this whole notion that he was going to sign for us? That really did my head in over the past few weeks.
Back to Redondo though and I this would be a pretty smart move by the club if they can pull this off. He is naturally a right back, which is a position that City are seriously lacking in, with Maxime Colin as the club’s only first-team player at that position, however he is also flexible enough to play across the backline and has also played at defensive midfield. Given how Pep Clotet spoke the other day about wanting the team to be flexible, then the more players you bring in that can play multiple positions and give you that flexibility to change the team around, the better.
Plus, he’s free so there aren’t any risks associated with the deal. Similar to the move with Fran Villalba, if things don’t work out then you can send him on his way in the summer, only this time he’ll be under contract, so you’ll be able to get a fee for him and get your money back.
