Blues have made an art of throwing away leads in recent weeks and it was no different at the Cardiff City Stadium this afternoon.

Once again, Blues were the better side and lived to rue missed chances in a game which should have been put beyond doubt. But being dissapointed with a share of the spoils away from home at a team who were, until last week, in play off contention, shows how far Gary Rowett has led this team.

After taking the lead through an impressive David Cotterill strike, Blues gifted Cardiff an equaliser after Jonathan Grounds was snoozing at the back post before Anthony Pilkington blasted home.

Rowett picked Charlee Adams ahead of Stephen Gleeson for the final game of the season and the youngsters didn’t let him down with an assured, if not spectacular performance.

When Blues attacked, they carried a threat and were twice denied by a defender on the line. But it was James Vaughan’s miss that left the travelling fans with heads in hands. The striker won the ball before easing past the last defender. In a one-on-one situation, Vaughan opted for power over placement and his effort cannoned back off the woodwork.

Certain areas of the team need strengthening if Blues are to mount a serious challenge next term and today was evidence of that.

The two full back berths could do with extra competition, a centre back is a must and a central midfielder and a striker could breathe new life into the team.

Despite the torrid run of form of late, we can look back at this season as one of progression. Blues were never ever expected to make the top six but had a good crack at it for 35 or 36 games. Finishing tenth means that Blues haven’t been outside the top ten for the entirety of the campaign which can be seen as an achievement in itself.

Let’s just hope we can keep Rowett at the helm and go again in August.

Have a good summer and Keep Right On!
