Blues need forgotten man back for Wednesday trip

|

Sliding down the Championship table is definitely not what Pep Clotet and the Birmingham City team need right now.

With pressure from those above and the expectations demanded from our owners, this week is crucial on many fronts. My sympathies go out to PC but the harsh reality is that a meagre points haul in this division equals a rapid slide.

Tomorrow at Sheffield Wednesday is a tough ask and with the added spice of facing our former manager, the stakes are fairly high for us to not lose this vital game. For that reason my plea to Clotet is to play David Davis as a defensive midfielder so he can break up play. Davis knows the game and he knows his strengths which makes him ideal for this encounter. Former managers have used Davis repeatedly when the going gets tough and tomorrow, in my view, he is needed.

Had we been higher up the league, then I would probably not suggest this move, but we have slipped quite badly from a great position to a nervy, looking over our shoulders, downward fall. This is not what the hierarchy want, believe me.

Three points make all the difference we know, but they are needed now if a healthy mid-table position is to be secured. Scoring goals will get us the wins but not doing this will put our defence and midfield under pressure for u to grind out the odd point.

At the moment we are barren upfront, although some may say we have the forwards, statistics are now proving that the goals against column is having to shoulder the woeful contribution of the goals. This area, with the likes of Jutkiewicz, Bellingham, Maghoma, Montero, Bela, Gimenez and Bailey etc must begin to deliver, before the inevitable decisions are made from above.

In the meantime, we enter a two match run against two former managers which adds spice alone, with both games very different as regards their approach. Tomorrow is the cagey one with a point being the real object which brings me back to the David Davis situation. Play him, I would implore PC to do.

Monk trusted him at the direst of times – now it’s Pep’s turn.
