Birmingham City have been defeated in their battle to sign Swedish attacker Robin Quaison as the exciting prospect has joined German club Mainz 05 from Palermo.
The 23-year-old was on Gianfranco Zola`s radar but interest from top European clubs ultimately signalled the end of Blues` chances.
Zola is still looking to get at least one deal over the line on deadline day with Jerome Sinclair and Lee Chung-yong the names being linked.
