Blues make interesting move with window winding down – Report

|

I did say that there were potentially going to be some moves.

And it turns out I was right, although this one was probably some way down the list of expected departures.

The Blues announced yesterday that 20-year-old attacking midfielder Charlie Lakin is to join Stevenage on loan until the end of the season. Having made a few appearances at the start of last season, opportunities have become a little bit harder to come by thanks to the array of transfers that they have made this summer.

It is interesting to note though, that the club have announced that they do have the option of bringing him back during the January transfer window. Although common practice by parent clubs when sending players out on loan, I do think it’s a smart move to have included it as part of the deal.

Birmingham started the summer with a rather small squad, but have filled it out quite nicely with plenty of signings, but you never know when you might find yourself in a situation like Leeds did last season with a heavy spate of injuries through the year. So the fact that the club does have the flexibility to bring him back in case such an unfortunate set of circumstances should occur is a positive outcome.

Also as FootballInsider reported with Leeds and their situation regarding the Eddie Nketiah loan deal, clubs can sometimes face financial penalties if they don’t give their loan players enough minutes. So perhaps Birmingham are valuing playing time over finances in this situation, because if they feel he isn’t playing enough they can call him back and send him to another club where he might get more minutes.

What do you make of the loan move? Are Stevenage the right club for him? Would you prefer he went somewhere else? Or do you think he should have stayed and added a bit more depth to the first team, perhaps even made a few appearances with them?
