Gary Rowett is very pleased to have signed Maikel Kieftenbeld, the midfielder has signed on a 3 year deal from FC Groningen.

The Blues boss is confident that his new player is ready to make the step across Europe and into England. He spoke about the quality of the Dutch league and how Kieftenbeld had already achieved a high finish over there (8th) and a cup win.

Rowett revealed that Blues had been watching him towards the end of last season. Head of Performance, Darren Robinson, had been over to watch his games.

This throws into question to notion that Birmingham moved onto target number two following Robert Tesche. Did Rowett have plans to bring them both in? That would suggest both Davis and Gleeson would lose their places. I still think had Tesche been available Rowett would have strengthened elsewhere.

The Birmingham manager described the player ‘he is a very intelligent player.

‘He is a defensive midfielder, he sits in and breaks the game up. He is very clever when he wins it. You can also build possession through him a little bit as well.’

He continued by saying that he feels the player will very much suit Birmingham’s style of play and that in his opinion Kieftenbeld is one of those players that gives you 7/10 every week.

Speaking on the time it took to do the deal ”It took a bit of time. We were aware of a release clause in his contract. We were trying to find out the exact figure.’

Kieftenbeld may go straight into the team to face Leicester on Saturday, given his lack of game time with his new team mates. Birmingham are just a stones throw away from the start of the season and will be eager to bed in their new midfielder.
