Blues – getting value for money?

Last week’s flurry of transfer activity has bought the number of new arrivals to seven, but the total sum spent so far by the Board is still just over £8m (excluding any add-ons).

Midfielder Kapo has been the most expensive player bought in so far, netting Juventus a fee of £3m for his services.

Although Fabrice Muamba’s eventual fee might top the £4m mark if all the add-on clauses are activated, the base fee to acquire him from Arsenal was £2.5m.

O’Connor’s purchase from Locomotiv Moscow was in the region of £2.7m, but so far all other transfers have been picked up via the Bosman system; good business for a club that cannot (with the best will in the world) compete with the likes of the Big Four.

Birmingham fans seem to be particularly pleased at the arrivals of Schmitx and Der Ridder, who certainly attracted plenty of attention during the U21 European Competition in June.

It seems likely that more signings are to be expected before the transfer window closes at the end of August.

An obvious gap still exists in defence, where a quality centre-half is needed.

Rumours still abound about the acquisition of another striker, particularly as there was mention last week of Mikael Forssell crossing the city to West Bromwich Albion as part of a deal for Diomansy Kamara.

Clemence and DJ Campbell’s futures are by no means certain, although inmost fans’ opinions it would be a waste to move on either of these players.

As David Sullivan was quoted recently as saying that July would be the main focus of transfer activity, more news in the near future seems certain.
