Blues Game Plan That Toppled Watford

Rowett has revealed that Birmingham had a specific game plan that game from Joe Carnall and the team in their performance analyst role.

Blues shaped up slightly differently, bringing two lads into the midfield three instead of a front three and advanced Andrew Shinnie to target the deep lying play maker Watford deploy.

The result? a dominant performance.

‘we just felt as though that would give Watford those little pockets in front of the back four to go into and manoeuvre which they do really, really well.

“They have good rotation in there, lots of movement, and I think sometimes you have got to stay patient and keep your shape.

“Sometimes when you give a team possession around the halfway line those are the areas you have got to be careful of.’

Another plan was to get balls into the box as Watford have been struggling to defend that kind of approach for much of the season. Which would explain why Donaldson was given the nod again.

This resulting in two important goals for Blues and a very important three points. So does it seem like a lot of extra thought is going into these games?

I don’t think Clark wasn’t doing similar things in assessing the opposition. But Rowett’s approach to the game is different and that is where the difference lies.

The fact that Clark was telling us to expect crap because of the budget and Rowett is telling the players to pass it out speaks volumes about the approach.

“We have got a very good analyst called Joe Carnall, who picks lots of bits outs and so far he has been a massive help to us.

“We highlighted one or two areas to the players that we felt we could try and exploit.
