Birmingham City had to come from a goal down to earn a draw with Oxford United on Saturday at the Kassam Stadium.

City didn’t play their strongest team, but Dean Smalley scored a terrific first half goal when he picked the ball up on the half way line with his back to goal, he then ran on and beat Colin Doyle with a neat finish.

City had been on top up to that point; they then had to soak up some pressure from the home side before Adam McGurk levelled just before half time.

In the second half, Asa Hall twice came close to restoring the hosts’ lead but Blues survived and then they could have won the game at the death had it not been for a good save from Ryan Clarke that denied McGurk his second.

Oxford Utd: Clarke, Bevans, Raynes (Heath ht), Wright, Newey, Davies (Hall 67), Whing (O’Dowda 78), Rose (Marsh 78), Rigg (Meades 67), Constable (Kitson ht), Smalley (Potter ht).

Subs not used: Crocombe.

Blues: Doyle, Eardley (Little ht), Bartley (Higgins 72), Hancox (Davis ht), Burn, Mullins, Reilly, McGurk, Green (Shinnie 67), Allan (Arthur 58), Adeyemi (Lee 58).

Subs not used: Randolph, Robinson, Elliott.
