Blues dealt blow in their pursuit of 8-goal forward, but they’ll be able to cope – Report

Looks like we might have to look somewhere else.

Reports in The Sun (Print edition, 3/11/19, Page 61) suggested that the Blues were reported in signing Nahki Wells. The 29-year-old forward is currently on loan at QPR from Premier League side Burnley and has eight goals to his name so far in the league, however the Blues were prepared to make a £6m bid for his services to tempt him away from Loftus Road.

Now though, it seems as if that deal will come to a screeching halt as Wells revealed to talkSPORT that he wants to stay in West London and believes that QPR are capable of making a promotion push this season.

Whilst it might seem like a bit of a disappointment to essentially find yourself rejected in this way, in my mind, this deal became dead in the water as soon as the Blues signed Jeremie Bela. The Blues seem to be operating on a fairly straight forward policy of cheap and cheerful. That’s why they have signed so many free agents, such as Bela so far under Pep Clotet’s reign.

With the Financial Fair Play penalties hanging over them from last season, they were always going to have to do things fairly cheaply, and having spent £6.3m (according to the BBC) on Ivan Sunjic in the summer, to spend that sort of money on Wells would have been taking an awful risk.

What area do Blues need the most investment this January?

Goalkeeper

Defence

Midfield

Forward

Wells was clearly going to offer himself up as a potential partner for Lukas Jutkiewicz up top, but the fact is now that Blues have got so many options with the likes of Alvaro Gimenez, Kerim Mrabti and the aforementioned Bela, as well as attacking midfielders like Fran Villalba that bringing in one more would have been a bit of overkill and would have left a number of players out of a job and risking dissent within the ranks as they all fought for one position.
