Blues Cup Win A Tonic – Now For The Survival Campaign

|

Praise has to be given to the Birmingham City players who battled gamely on with ten men and nicked the win against Blackburn Rovers.

Whichever way you judge it, Blues deserved a break and they got it. Most of us would have preferred this to have been a league encounter where three precious points could have been the reward – but there you go.

Sunjic’s dismissal does however raise the question as to how useful this player is to us. When he signed a five year contract in the summer a few eyebrows were raised as this type of contract is very rare and very generous. So he must be good. Or is he. My view is one of ‘not sure’ and why the necessity for such a long contract. Perhaps he might become a firm favourite and if so great.

David Davis had a superb game, showing us just how important he is to our cause this season. My advice to Clotet is keep this player and even make him Captain in place of Dean. With the real possibility of Keifenbeld returning next month I would be tempted to play them both. Rowett and Monk had success with this combo.

As for the departure on loan for Steve Seddon to Portsmouth, I do not know the reasons for this, other than for him to get experience. This left sided warhorse came onto the scene and looked a bit special with a touch of the Stuart Pearce about him. Hopefully, Kenny Jacket can get him on the right track. Pompey have a snip here for a while.

Turning to the transfer window, most of the supporters I have spoken to are quietly hoping for anything that will stop the rot as regards to goals against. A dramatic change to the recent clamour for strikers.

Defensively in the league we are appalling and any movement, whether it be loans or permanent, will be important.Clarke-Salter and Roberts returning will be a boost there is no doubt, but whether they are the answer for a swift improvement is open to question.

This window is hard to predict for Blues as so much depends on the permanency of Clotet and his back room staff. My view is that the owners will see the twenty games remaining as a ‘steady eddie’ approach and get the 45 points required for safety. They may well trust Clotet in getting them and provide him with a couple of loan defenders to assist the cause, but more than that, I seriously cannot see any investment to secure anything other than survival.
