Birmingham City have considered signing free agent Kieran Richardson on a short term contract to offer defensive cover. But Blues manager Steve Cotterill is running the rule over his existing options before making a decision.

With Jonathan Grounds injured, Cotterill wants to ensure his options on the left side of defence aren`t weakened.

Former Aston Villa, West Brom and Manchester United man Richardson has been a free agent since his brief spell at Cardiff City ended just over a year ago. Last April, the 33 year-old underwent a trial at Spanish outfit Granada but failed to earn a permanent contract.

Richardson is one of several free agents looking for a club. Former Blues academy graduate Marcos Painter has also been mentioned within the corridors of B9.

Cotterill does have options at this disposal. Cohen Bramall is a left back and Maxime Colin is capable of switching sides. Steve Seddon, another of Blues’ academy prospects, is also in and around the first team squad.
