Birmingham boss Alex McLeish was delighted after watching his side overcome Reading to make it back into the Premier League at the first time of asking on Sunday.

Rovers ran out 2-1 winners with the goals coming from Keith Fahey and Kevin Phillips who gave Blues a 2-0 lead and although Marek Matejovsky pulled a goal back straight after Phillips’ strike on the hour, McLeish’s men held on and the day ended in jubilation.

Birmingham missed a chance to clinch promotion at home last weekend when Preston won 2-1, but this time the lads were in no mood to throw it away once again.

McLeish told Sky Sports 1: ‘I’m really delighted for everyone at the club.

‘Last week we wondered if our chance had gone and there were some tired legs out there today.

‘Before the match we just asked the lads to play the best game they’ve played all season.

‘Now it is not the time to start talking about what we are going to do in the Premier League. We just need to savour this moment.’
