Blues blunt the Blades and take big step towards safety

Blues 2 Sheffield Utd 1

Before this weekend, Birmingham City had only won from a losing position once. That was back in August, the opening home game of the season against Bristol City.

That day, Jacques Maghoma’s goal turned the game on its head and gave Blues all three points.

Maghoma was at it again yesterday netting the winner to haul Blues closer to safety

As usual, it was done the hard way. Mark Duffy’s scuffed shot put the Blades ahead after just seven minutes – and was duly booked for his celebration.

But Blues are a different team with Garry Monk at the helm and kept battling, never losing focus or confidence.

Marc Roberts gave Blues parity. The defender, in for the suspended Harlee Dean, met Maghoma’s corner and thumped the ball in from close range.

The visitors started the second half brightly and were working some decent positions. But David Stockdale was rarely troubled.

Maghoma and Jota were taking the game by the scruff of the neck and causing problems. But through the central midfield areas, Blues were sloppy.

Maikel Kieftenbeld was replaced by Craig Gardner and the hosts started to get a grip on the game.

Blues were soon ahead when Maghoma latched on to Che Adams’ lobbed pass, beat the defender for pace and kept his composure to slot past the onrushing Jamal Blackman in the 69th minute.

It was the least Blues deserved for their efforts and desire.

With Bolton and Barnsley both losing, Blues are within touching distance of survival once again.
