Paul Pogba’s recent move to Manchester United for £89.5m led the football world to bemoan modern day transfer fees. Here, Rob Wildey looks at four of Blues’ bargain buys of recent years.

DAMIEN JOHNSON
£50,000
BLACKBURN ROVERS

The Northern Irishman signed for Blues in 2002 from Blackburn Rovers. Initially signed as a right midfielder, Johnson proved his versatility by playing in central midfielder and both full back positions. He was Blues captain for three years, too. In eight years at the club, Johnson made 193 appearances.

SEB LARSSON
£1m
ARSENAL

The Swede signed initially on loan from Arsenal before a more permanent arrangement forĀ  £1m. Best known for his set piece ability and hunting down of referees, Larsson went on to appear 185 times over half a decade. He scored 19 goals.

KENNY CUNNINGHAM
£600k
WIMBLEDON

King Kenny was a linchpin of Blues’ immediate Premier League stability under former boss Steve Bruce. After signing for a million pound, the Irish international went on to make 134 appearances for Blues.

STERN JOHN
£100k
NOTTINGHAM FOREST

The £100k fee was repaid with a single goal at Villa Park. But in truth, John contributed a great deal to Blues. He was never prolific but John scored 21 goals in his time at Blues, including some vital ones.
