Blues are shaken but not stirred

If ever there was an indication of how far Blues are behind the Championship`s financial muscle men, then the Greg Stewart locale is it. The Dundee striker supposedly does not agree to the personal terms put to him.

Let`s put this into context. We`re talking about a Dundee player. Blues worked for weeks trying to agree a fee – and not to be held to ransom by the SPL club. And with other clubs reportedly expressing an interest in the 26 year-old, maybe his head was turned. But my thinking is that Blues offered the highest possible package within their economic parameters and are now unwilling – or unable to – return with improved terms.

While I`m not entirely bothered by the fact we have failed to land yet another target, this situation shows how fragile Blues` purse strings are.

The Championship`s financial chasm is undoubtedly wider than the Premier League`s. On one hand, you have the Newcastle`s, Villa`s, Norwich`s, Brighton`s and Sheffield Wednesday`s of this world – clubs who can throw money at the cause willy-nilly. Then you have clubs like Blues who are forced to be stringent in whatever they spend which can often mean playing second fiddle.

That`s why a dose of reality is required. Gary Rowett appears to be trying his utmost to improve this squad on rocky financial waters. Managing to get the Che Adams deal over the line ate an enormous chunk of his pocket money. You may feel that we overpaid for Adams. But in today`s market, his potential suggests otherwise.

So we`re back to the drawing board. Rowett`s comments yesterday suggest that he`s looking to bring in two players before the closing of the transfer window. No doubt, he will have other irons in the fire and missing out on Stewart isn`t the be all and end all.

And do we really want to sign a player who is clearly driven by money rather than progression?
