With yet another day passing where a striker has been linked with Birmingham City, I thought it would only be right to voice an opinion on those that have been rumoured to be interesting the club.

Over the past week to ten days, the likes of Leeds United’s Mirco Antenucci and Brighton and Hove Albion’s Bobby Zamora have been linked with Blues and I know that Gary Rowett said he wanted a new striker this summer but come on, why would he go for these two old timers.

The current number one striker that we have, Clayton Donaldson, is already at the grand old age of 32 and it begs the question, can he give us another top season performing week in, week out doing all the running that he does? My answer to that is probably not.

Yes he may be able to offer us a string of ten games and then he needs to be rested for two or three and then he can go again but I don’t think we will get another big season out of him.

From that debate, you need to question why are we being linked with strikers who are in their 30’s when we should be looking at younger players who can produce at this level already, or potentially even venture into the lower leagues or abroad if we are feeling adventurous, although it didn’t work out too well with Nicolai Brock-Madsen.

Although some may argue the fact that Antenucci and Zamora are very good strikers at this level, can they really adapt to Blues’ style of play? Can they run down the line to pick up passes that have been pinged into them for 90 minutes? Quite simply…no!

I can’t wait for the day this summer where I see us linked with a striker aged 25 or under because it will be a breath of fresh air and I think it will bring renewed optimism to fans who want to see players who can produce on a weekly basis.

Personally, I believe if Rowett wanted to use Donaldson as a poacher, he would get us 15 goals plus in a season but the simple fact is, the Jamaican international has never been used in that role for us and although he has it in his locker, Rowett wants to use him as somebody who can run the channels and be in the box at the same time.

After his loan deal ended, there was talk of Kyle Lafferty being a summer transfer target for us but with his parent club Norwich City now being in the Sky Bet Championship, I think they may look to use him more next season.

Blues fans, would you realistically like us to go after players like Bobby Zamora and Mirco Antenucci or would you prefer us to go after younger strikers? Let us know in the comment section down below!
