Gary Madine, of Sheffield Wednesday, is to join Bolton next month after Neil Lennon has convinced him that his future lies up North.

The striker will be out of contract this summer and Wednesday have no interest in retaining him. The former Gateshead player is understood to want to stay further North than venturing down to Birmingham.

Birmingham are in the market for another striker, having been linked with Madine and Emmanuel-Thoams, both big powerful strikers to rival Clayton Donaldson up top. I think we are starting to see a picture emerge of what Rowett would like to add to his attacking options.

It is difficult to see why Madine would opt for a struggling Bolton until you consider proximity and where the player was born. Also given that Birmingham are just one season into their revival it may not be such a convincing move for players.

Bolton are also operating on a modest budget this year so it is no surprise to see Birmingham competing with them for players.

Gary Madine started his career at Gateshead but has had his career stuttered by stints in prison for various violent offences. Although Wednesday vowed to stand by the player they are now releasing him just a year after his latest sentence.

Once a handful at Sheffield Wednesday, Madine has not rekindled his form despite spells at Carlisle, Coventry and Blackpool. He has 47 league career goals since breaking into Carlisle’s first team in 2007.

This player is still a young man and could well develop into a prominent striker, but at this point in time, given his record and his lack of goals – it would have been a gamble to sign him. Should a suitable replacement target join the club I don’t think we should lose any sleep over not getting this one.

It is also worth noting that Birmingham City have no commented on the story, so does that mean that they were indeed in for him? and he hasn’t answered them yet? – I’m just speculating here.

We’ll keep you up to date on any developments.
