Birmingham’s Goalkeeper Search Hits A Dead End – What should we do?

|

With the club having lost out on Bartosz Bialkowski, there will be many fans left wondering where our search for a new goalkeeper will be heading next.

Usually, you would simply look at the next name on the list, and go after them, but with the doubts surrounding the transfer embargo, you have to have other contingency plans if we can’t make further signings during this transfer window. So what are our options?

Trust in Trueman

Connal Trueman is 22 years of age. He is still young for a keeper, but not so young that you would think he could struggle to cope with the pressure. However, there is no doubting he lacks experience.

His senior career amounts to four games at National League side Solihull Moors at the start of last season where he conceded 12 goals. He’s a good shot stopper but there are massive question marks about whether he is of sufficient quality to play in the Championship.

Go back to Stockdale or Kuszczak

Going back cap in hand to players you have asked to leave isn’t an easy thing to do, but Garry Monk may have to consider doing that with this pair. It does depend on how things turn out in the coming few weeks. The club may have negotiated successfully with the EFL and had their embargo lifted, but you can’t bank on that happening.

Wih Jamal Blackman having been recruited by Leeds, Stockdale’s exit route doesn’t look clear, and it may be a good idea for the manager to sit down and have theĀ conversation. The player himself has expressed there isn’t any bad blood about the decision to sell him.

Keep on bidding and hope things work out

Probably the likeliest scenario. After losing out Bialkowski, another name is likely being pursued. They could finalise the deal with the player’s club, and hope that the EFL sign off on the deal and register the player in time for the first game of the season.

If the club are confident that the Financial Fair Play problems can be sorted out then keeping with this approach is likely.

What do you think? Let me know in the poll:
