Birmingham’s Defensive Duress

Birmingham City will be unfamiliar territory this season with no fewer than seven options at centre-back. Lee Clark has been busy ensuring reinforcements in defence were available right from the start, as opposed to few being available at the death last season.

Competition for places is set to be hot through pre-season as the likes of Jonathan Grounds, David Edgar, Gavin Gunning and Grant Hall join Paul Robinson, Will Packwood and Jonathan Spector in defence. Following the loan recalls of last season Birmingham now have much more permanent players for the upcoming campaign.

The midlands team are yet to spend any money this transfer window, all the new defenders are free agents with the exception of Grant Hall; on loan from Spurs. Birmingham City supporters will have to wait to find out if recruiting on no budget is enough to solve their defensive problems.

The team are back at the training ground today to start pre-season training, where manager Lee Clark will be starting to decide who gets to go first at centre-back with an upcoming game on July 6 away at Cork City.

The personnel this year appear to be more versatile enabling the manager to spread his options across various positions. Jonathan Grounds is accomplished at left-back and centre-back, whilst David Edgar and Jonathan Spector both remain available for midfield.

It is also well worth noting Birmingham are set to welcome back long term injury sufferer Neil Eardley to right-back and Mitch Hancox to left-back.
