Gillingham are reportedly ready to go in for Amari’i Bell after he was released from his Birmingham City contract.

Birmingham had another years option on the young left back but he has not done enough to secure his place under Gary Rowett and will now be looking for another club.

Ahead of Bell at Birmingham is Mitch Hancox and Jonathan Grounds; the latter having completely cemented his place in the team over the previous season. It’s hard to see how Bell would have competed with either of them at this time.

Also with the added speculation that Rowett would be interested in bringing Graeme Shinnie to the club it would seem Bell would have had to really impress to keep his spot.

Fleetwood town are also being linked with Bell, so he may not be short of options either. The next team he goes to he will need first team football if he is to further his professional career.

Bell signed with Birmingham as a trainee and only made 1 league appearance for the club. He had loan spells at Nuneaton; Kidderminster; Mansfield; Swindon and finally Gillingham before being released from his contract.

It would seem that Bell may well be best suited in the lower leagues but that is not to say we may not one day see him in the Championship should he get his chance to be a teams first choice left back.
