The Birmingham Mail are reporting that Blues spent just £150k this summer, one of the lowest in the league. It’s still more than some had feared.

There was a time when Birmingham City could only sell players. The financial strain on the club from player’s wages had meant that the club simply could not operate in the transfer market when a fee was involved. It does seem that things are improving, although the business done is still on a tiny scale.

Fulham spent £11m on Ross McCormack, Cardiff spent a combined £14.9m on new players and Norwich, £14.8m.

Blues shelled out for two players this summer. Denny Johnstone cost around £80k from Celtic whilst David Davis cost around £70k. The other 11 recruits cost nothing. Birmingham were also prepared to spend again when Seb Hines came to St Andrews on deadline day to discuss a move.

It is no secret why Birmingham are operating like this. In truth, many clubs in England operate this way at the moment. Without real heavy investment into the playing squad it is hard for teams to get out of the Championship.

Blues have had fantastic youth talent of the past 4-5 seasons and if they can produce more of than I am confident that Blues can get better without spending money.

Perhaps the most significant financial point of this window was that Blues said no to Palace when they asked for Demarai Gray. That is now the precedent of what we intend to do with this next group of youth players. – keep them!

Birmingham are going to need a lot more time to mature and build the team further. But there could be reason to think the club can now move forward rather than backwards.

To make you feel better, here are the teams that spent LESS than Birmingham:

– Bolton (£0)
– Ipswich Town (£0)
– Watford (£0)

Yes, Birmingham were the lowest club to spend any more at all.
