Birmingham City have today completed the signing of Jonathan Grounds on a two-year deal. Grounds was linked with Birmingham fairly early on after the season had finished.

Grounds, 26, plays mainly at left back but the official site have confirmed he will be considered a possible centre-back. Grounds joins up with Birmingham officially on July 1st.

Grounds most notable first team spell was last time out with Oldham Athletic where he made 106 appearances.

Birmingham have needed some strengthening at left back since David Murphy was forced to retire and Mitch Hancox has found himself similarly injury prone. Lee Clark has worked with Grounds previously at Norwich whilst Chief Scout Malcolm Crosby knows of Grounds through his previous spell with Middlesbrough.

Lee Clark told to official site that Jonathan`s versatility would be important for the team, which would fit in with the theme that Grounds could be set to play a bit-part covering role within the team.

Birmingham still have no new injection of finances or a guarantee of a takeover, Lee Clark has therefore pressed on with budget conscious signings. Birmingham are making this transfer happen as Grounds was not retained by Oldham and his wages are more than likely below the reported £5,000 a week wage cap at the club.
