BCFCFollowers.com are reporting that the club are poised to announce the signing of Middlesbrough striker Ashley Fletcher “in the next 24 hours.”

We can only sign five players on loan or on a free transfer between now and August 31st, and considering the 22-year-old cost Boro £6.5m last summer, it’s surprising to hear that this would be a “permanent” deal. I would, therefore, take this with a large pinch of salt, unless it is a loan with an option to purchase agreement.

Garry Monk is a fan of the former Manchester United forward after having signed the player when he was Middlesbrough manager. However, he wasn’t in favour under Tony Pulis and moved to Sunderland on loan in January.

The Teessiders are also reportedly pursuing a deal for Ipswich’s Martyn Waghorn which indicates Fletcher is deemed surplus to requirements at the Riverside stadium.

If this deal does go through as quickly as BCFCFollowers say then it seems this move has been in the pipeline for a while. What do you think? Would Fletcher be a good signing? Let me know in the poll below:

  • How can anyone say we have nether seen him play you have given us nothing to go on no stats no info nill. I know nothing about him.

    • Good player….. people forget that has a striker you need support from midfield…. Ash is quick. At West Ham and Boro they never played to his strengths…. you play to his strengths he will score you goals.

      • I`m not sure where you`ve got GOOD PLAYER from, but good to him and I do genuinely hope things change for him `cos he deserves a bit of luck – I think.

  • Bit of a raw talent but we need back up in all areas. Could come good this season or flop. That’s the way it is even if you pay 30m for a player.

  • I don’t think this loan and free signings only is wrigt think about it a min GM wants 1 or 2 players and they cost les than 5 loan players in fees. So he could sign them why not he would be spending less money on them and they would be of better value overall.

  • He has poor passing ability but could come good as he is good in the air where we need competition up front …seems he is worth a punt …
