The club are close to signing Aston Villa midfielder Gary Gardner on loan, according to the Birmingham Mail journalist Brian Dick, with the deal expected to be completed “later today.”

The 26-year-old will link up with his older brother Craig in midfield, and the pair reportedly travelled together to the training ground today so Gary could have his medical.

The younger sibling has spent his entire career at out fiercest rivals but he has been on loan spells at five different clubs during the last seven years.

Last campaign, he spent the season on loan at Barnsley. He played 31 games in all competitions for the Tykes, scoring two goals and providing two assists.

With Maikel Kieftenbeld and Cheikh N’Doye both able to play as holding midfielders, it seems like we are already covered in the position, but the long-term injury to David Davis may have changed things.

Still, I’m surprised if we do sign the Villa midfielder as although we could do with strengthening in the middle of the park, I thought we would go after a more offensive player.

  • Vile fans say he is a better footballer than Craig and we have offensive players now so bolstering the central midfield id a must with Digger being out. N’Doye is a destroyer and only used when we need to defend the middle of the park. His passing is useless but he can kick players really well.
Just shows how low down the barrel we are looking for players at the moment though. Hopefully we can spend some money in January.

  • He is not a defensive midfielder he is a Deep laying playmaker nothing like Kieftenbeld or N’Doye he is more creative and likes to switch the play. So he is more offensive he is more like Davis but with a better pass on him. And will get forward more. Vile use him has a holding midfielder but that is why he don’t work for them.

  • I welcome this news,he’s a good player even if he is a B6 fan ( which he has expressed on numerous occasions ).I HOPE our fans back him and welcome him to the club, all players need the support of the fans,if that support turns against them they loose confidence and motivation.I do not see this as scraping the bottom of the barrel,he possesses some genuine quality and will add to the team and squad.Only thing I would not want him playing against Villa, they still own him and would he give 100% against them ? Guess it might be written into his contract by the Villa that he can’t play against them when we do the double over ’em … KRO

  • its not where your from its about doing and syncing the team, and I believe this a very clever move,
although thats not saying that my opinion means any think, but Monks does I think.
