Birmingham Lack Depth

It took just a few key omissions from the starting line up and more importantly the bench, to undo Gary Rowett’s spectacular start to his Birmingham return.

Clayton Donaldson ended up isolated and ineffective upfront at Blackpool and there was a lack of creativity through the middle of the park.

Firstly, Birmingham were again without Wes Thomas, a pacey striker that is a handy tool to deploy against wore down teams in the second half. He is also a keen ball chaser, keeping pressure on the ball and pressure off the defence late on in games.

In addition to that Blues were agonisingly close to the return of Nikola Zigic who would have caused havoc in a scrappy game such as the Blackpool game. It would seem he will be a shrewd addition to the squad.

Perhaps even more noticeable was the missing Andrew Shinnie. His chance creation and clever passing went heavily missed in midfield.

Birmingham were over reliant on David Cotterill who didn’t have a great afternoon considering the nature of the game. Blackpool put in a hard working performance and tracked down the wings with numbers.

There simply wasn’t enough available to Gary Rowett to change the game or indeed play it the way he would have liked. But Thomas is back this weekend, Zigic may not have his Visa papers in time.

Either way there doesn’t seem much out of place other than a slight lack of depth, nothing we shouldn’t already know. On Blues budget, when key players are missing, the result may come up a miss.
