Birmingham Hope To Tie Down Star

Birmingham City are too offer Demarai Gray a new and improved deal to represent where the 18 year old is at in the first team.

Gray has made a good impact in his breakthrough season and the club are rightly now trying to tie him down to a longer deal. Whilst the player is under the age of 24 Birmingham would be subject to compensation for him even if he did leave.

I was aware that Blues had already intended to offer the youngster a deal and had put the idea on the back burner. This is more than likely due to them trying to fend off bids from other clubs.

This is real signal of intent at Birmingham. They want to secure their young stars for as long as possible and are doing that but placing a high price on them for other clubs.

Yes Gray may well leave eventually, but it will be for a good fee. and if that fee is enough to deter interest for long enough, we may see an improving Birmingham City built around players like Gray, Brown, Packwood and the other academy graduates.

A lot has been said over the past few days about the academy at Birmingham and quite rightly so. And, holding onto the lastest graduate is certainly pleasing for the club as whole.

After all, the academy is not there to produce players that the club can sell for profit. It is supposed to be there to operate as a supplier to the first team. Blues academy does that fantastically well.

Whether Gray signs or not will be a big clue as to how long he will be here. Rowett explained that Gray had never expressed an intention to leave and was happy at the club.

As we know in football, that means little when money is on the table. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Gray here for another few years if he does sign.

Things could be getting interesting at Birmingham over the next 3-5 seasons, with plenty of young talent being able to break through into pre season and then maybe into the team.
