Birmingham fans shouldn’t be too disappointed, latest development isn’t all bad news – Report

|

Well, it looks as if we’ve been had.

Despite reports in Spain suggesting that he was due for a medical at St Andrew’s on Monday, it appears as though Mateo Garcia will in fact not be coming to England. According to Richard Wilford of BBC West Midlands, the rumours surrounding the 22-year-old’s move to St Andrew’s were just stuff and nonsense. Apparently “the club are not looking to strengthen in that area in this window and they’re surprised by stories coming from Spanish media.”

I’m not too disappointed in this latest ‘development’, if you can call something that never really happened a development. In my piece on Tuesday about what Garcia could bring to the table, I didn’t see him as someone that would have an instant impact at the club and if I’m being truly honest, I don’t think he was someone that the club desperately needed.

That’s not to say he wouldn’t have been some benefit to having him on board. The club is short of wide men and although the belief is that the formation for this year won’t necessarily require them (I did also suggest he could play in a number ten role), it’s still good to have the option of switching the formation further down the line and bringing wingers in. You never know when a spate of injuries or suspensions could force Pep Clotet to tweak his style a little bit, maybe then he could have been some use after all.

However the night wasn’t all bad, whilst Richard Wilford pointed out that the club wasn’t looking for wide men, he did later reveal that the club is working on bringing in a forward and that it was their priority.

At least it shows that the club isn’t going to buy someone for the sake of buying him. The club is short of forwards, so they are looking at signing a forward. Pretty simple when you think about it.

Whilst a lot of fans are hoping, and if I’m honest so am I, that the forward is George Puscas, even if that signing doesn’t come off, at least fans can be comforted in knowing that the club is looking at that area. Blues supporters have been hoping that the club finds a new partner for Luka Jutkiewicz and it looks as if one could be on the way.

Although we thought Garcia was on the way, so forgive me if I don’t get too excited and start predicting how many more goals we’re going to get this season.
