Jordan Rhodes has emerged as a surprise target for Birmingham City, according to a Vital Blues source. The striker has found first team opportunities hard to come by since helping Middlesbrough to promotion to the Premier League and has appeared just twice this season.

The 25 year-old scored 85 goals in 169 games for former club Blackburn Rovers before his move to Boro which cost in excess of  £10m.

Despite being interested in the player, Blues are unlikely to be able to fund a permanent deal but are hoping that Middlesbrough’s indecision on the player’s future may prompt a loan move.

Other Championship clubs, namely Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday, are reportedly sniffing around and have significantly more financial clout than Blues. But both clubs aren’t as likely as Blues to settle for a temporary deal.
