Birmingham City have released a statement vowing to take action against any supporters found to be guilty of a scuffle that ensued near the Cardiff family stand after the Bluebirds took the team on Saturday.

Blues lost 2-0 away at Cardiff and a minority of fans caused a disturbance within the crowd. The police were called into action at the time and now both respective police forces are investigating the incident.

Behavior such as this has no place in the game and I would hope it was the result of very few people on the day. The game needs to be inclusive as possible, but further incidents like this deter and scare people away from what could be a very respectable sport.

Fan culture plays an important ambassadorial role for the sport and it takes the actions of very few to tarnish that reputation.

Birmingham City Football Club:

“The club recognise an incident took place involving a very small minority of the 1,582 Blues supporters who watched the team at the Cardiff City Stadium.

South Wales Police and West Midlands Police have launched an investigation, in conjunction with Birmingham City Football Club. Two fans were arrested on the day for public order offences.

“The club gives its full backing to the Police and we will take action against any person who is found to have committed an offence during this incident.

“The club stresses that although it was a small minority involved, we nonetheless do not tolerate any form of crowd disorder among our supporters.

“Birmingham City Football Club would like to sincerely apologise to any Cardiff City fans and their families for any hurt or distress caused by the action of a mindless few, who are not representative of the majority of genuine Birmingham City supporters who follow the club away from home.”

One can only hope the necessary investigation results in justice being seen to be done and behavior that has a negative affect on the game kept to an absolute minimum.
