Chelsea Ladies are a formidable team who swept to victory of the Women’s Super League last season. The Women’s season is different to the men’s and finished in the Summer and therefore they’re the reigning champions heading into the new season.

Karen Carney, our beloved Skipper, has already joined the title holders as has been reported previously on the vital Birmingham site. Her departure showed that the Blues’ Ladies have fallen in terms of their appeal after winning the FA Cup and getting to the semi-finals of the Champions League just a few years ago.

Last season they just about secured Super League status, the last few games really went down the wire. Therefore, it is hard to attract the best players and it has meant that our players have left in order to continue playing in the Champions League and with the hope of winning a title.

This article is about Becky Spencer’s recent departure to the Chelsea Ladies squad after coming to an agreement over fees (which is still undisclosed) over the Christmas rest period.

Becky will always be remembered at the club most notably for her contribution to the FA Cup final in 2012 where she was pivotal in the penalty shoot-out victory. But not only is she a good shot stopper, she is a brilliant all round ‘keeper. In the modern women’s game I cannot find many who rival her talents. She will definitely be hard to replace and she is one of the reason why Birmingham Ladies stayed up last season.

As a 24 year old it is understandable that she wants to move on and better herself. But it is a great disappointment to everyone at the club. A true model professional was Spencer and I’m sure that her presence in the dressing room will be a great miss.

The good news is that we do get a fee for such a talented player. Sometimes we allow these players to leave at the end of their contract with no real gain for the club. At least this can be invested in good signings and to help keep the club afloat. So Carney, Weston and now Spencer have left the Birmingham side. 2 very influential players and one who was up and coming. The question is, can we find replacements?
